Rwanda Development Board (RDB) through its department of tourism and conservation (ORTPN) is set to bankroll the inaugural Kwita Izina cycling competition scheduled for June 13-14. The cycling event will be the first local event on the local cycling calendar.
During Tuesday’s press conference, the local cycling federation (Ferwacy) president Aimable Bayingana revealed that RDB had allocated Frw 15.2 million for the event, which will also count as the first event on the local cycling calendar.
During the two-day race, cyclists will ride from Kigali to Musanze where they will have a stopover before proceeding to Rubavu. On day two, the cyclists will head back to Kigali.
At the end of the race, the winner will bag Rwf 0.5 m while the 25th cyclist walks away with Rwf 40,000. On top of local cyclists, Ferwacy has invited cyclists from the region and South Africa.
Although cash prizes will be awarded to individuals, cyclists have been advised that registration for the race will be done on club level.
Rubavu, Kayonza, Huye, Rapide, Rwamagana, Cine Elmay and Unatave are some of the local clubs expected to compete in the event.
