In the government’s bid to improve and take medical services closer to the public, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has revealed that by the end of the year each district in the country will have three ambulances.

Minister of Health Dr. Richard Sezibera has said that the government is planning to purchase about 90 ambulances to equip medical centres across the country.

"We intend to have at least three ambulances in every district across the country,” said Sezibera.

He added that: "we have so far obtained 40 ambulances and by the end of this year we will be having all the 90 ambulances.”

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), last month donated six ambulances to the Ministry.

The purchase of ambulances is an initiative of the Ministry of Health under the proposal by Sezibera to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of improving health services by 2015.

According to previous reports, the ambulances that have already been obtained are now operational at different medical centres including hospitals of Bushenge, Rubavu, Rwamagana, Gisenyi, Gahini and Gihundwe.

The purchase of ambulances implies that Rwandans will soon be able to get quick medical responses in case of emergencies which analysts say will further bring down infant mortality.
