Police in Kamembe Sector Rusizi District are holding a teacher at Mururu Teacher Training Centre (TTC) in Mururu Sector for allegedly assaulting a student whom he was accused of indiscipline.

François Nkusi, a catholic brother was arrested last Thursday after he allegedly involved in a physical brawl with Naphtal Maniraruta, 21, who is currently admitted at Gihundwe Hospital.

The catholic brother, teaching Religion and Economics was apprehended after some of his colleagues and students reported the matter to police.

"We arrested and detained brother Nkusi for assaulting a student,” confirmed a police official who preferred to remain anonymous because he is not authorised to talk to the press.

Speaking from the police station, the former genocide convict admitted to beating up the student, arguing that it was a normal disciplinary measure.

When The New Times visited the student in hospital, he claimed that the teacher pushed him against the wall, punched him on the head, stomach and hit him with a bench before other students intervened. But medics said he was out of danger.

In a separate interview, the school director, Fokasi Ndagijimana said that he would do his best to calm the situation at school.
