Epiphanie Nyirabarame gave Rwandans something to smile about after a captivating run in yesterday’s Kigali International Peace Marathon.

The two-time Olympian, by far the country’s top performer clocked one hour, 17 minutes and 38 minutes to finish second in the women’s half marathon, scooping $1400 (approx. Rwf.0.77 millions) in the process.

Sarah Ramadhani from Tanzania pocketed $1600(Rwf. 0.88 millions) after winning the event with a time of one hour, 16 minutes and 55 seconds while Uganda’s Catherine Webombesa finished third earning $1200(Rwf.0.66 millions).

In the men’s category, Kenya’s James Meli edged last year’s winner Martin Sulle from Tanzania. Meli clocked 1:03:52 beating the Tanzanian by 15 seconds. Charles Mwai wrapped up the podium slots in third place with 1:04:47.

Despite all the hype surrounding Disi Dieudonne’s involvement, he missed out citing a nagging pain in his leg.

In the men’s full marathon, it was an all Kenyan affair as Benjamin Kipkosgei Tabui, Nicolas Kipkemoi and Emmanuel Nabei dominated proceedings. Kipkosgei clocked 2:21:38 in first place while Kipkemoi and Nabei finished in second and third places after clocking 2:22:08 and 2:22:32 respectively.

Kipkemoi and Nabei walked away with $1600 and $1200 respectively. Kipkosgei won $2000. Rwanda’s Felix Ntirenganya finished eighth after clocking 2:25:13.

In the women category, Tanzania’s Bryton Banuelia beat the Kenyan duo of Zeddy Chepkoech and Kurui Jechumba after clocking 2:47:49.

Meanwhile, APR clocked 2:15:07 to finish first in the 15km relay marathon. New Stars Athletics Club (NAS) and National University of Rwanda finished second and third respectively.

This year’s marathon attracted 3247 runners from Africa, Europe and North America.
