Local motorsport governing body (RAC) president Christian Gakwaya has said that Rwanda is ready to host the 2024 FIA General Assembly which will take place in Kigali from December 8-13.

The FIA Annual General Assembly week, which is chaired by the FIA President, is a significant event in the FIA calendar. It features meetings between FIA member organizations with the goal of approving proposals to advance mobility and motor sport.

"It is a big statement for the country, and our sport in general, trust and capability. There is no better way of launching the event for future,” Gakwaya told Times Sport.

"We are growing and we will be able do better in future, having entire world to be in Kigali, promotors of rally and family will be amazing,” he added.

In its 120th Anniversary year, the FIA will celebrate the champions and stars of the motor sport world in Kigali, Rwanda, at the newly-named FIA Awards.

On Formula One bid

In August, Formula 1 Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali revealed to Motorsport.com that a meeting had been set up with Rwanda to discuss the country’s prospect of hosting a grand prix.

The F1 chief at the time said that Rwanda was serious about the project which, he added, showed some promise.

Gakwaya said that Rwanda is "prepared” and "committed” to holding a Formula 1 grand prix.

"It’s time for us to be part of the big events calendar. Rwanda, as a country, we are committed and prepared to host a Formula 1 race,” said Gakwaya, adding, "Our interest in Formula 1 aligns with the national strategy to leverage sports as a lever for economic transformation.”

Rwanda is biding to bring the world championship back to the continent for the first time since 1993.
