Grace’s articles on the anniversary of the genocide were heart-wrenching and very moving. I read your paper online almost every day.
I had the extreme pleasure of visiting your beautiful country in March/April of this year. I was totally overwhelmed by its beauty and by the most wonderful people I’ve ever met while traveling. So kind, so warm, so gracious, so forgiving.
I, like most of the tourists who visit Rwanda, came to trek the Virungas in search of the mountain gorillas. But I had another, more important purpose for coming to Rwanda.
I was also there to visit a lady who is now a dear friend, Cathy Emmerson and her husband Teste, who have a small school in Ruhengeri and they contribute so much to the community.
I was overcome emotionally when I arrived at the little school and to this day I have no control over my tears when I look at all the wonderful pictures I have of the children, the ladies and gentlemen of the community.
I’m so proud to call them all my friends and have come to consider them my family. They are forever in my heart!
I did a lot of research on Rwanda before my visit and am deeply moved by what you have experienced.
But I’m also very impressed by what the Rwandan people have accomplished in the last 15 years. You must be very proud! You are very special people and the world needs to know that.
I have become a very vocal advocate of Rwanda and tell everyone what a wonderful country it is!
As a Canadian I take some small comfort in the fact that General Romeo Dallaire tried in vain to tell the world what was happening. But as we all know his pleas fell on deaf ears.
I hope those people have had many sleepless nights and are haunted by the ghosts of Rwanda. I’ve come to love Rwanda and the people there. I’ll be doing all I can to support my friends in Ruhengeri and will be back very soon.
Like my friend Cathy there may come a day when I make Rwanda my home. Nothing would make me prouder than being called a Rwandan!
Your paper is amazing and I look forward to reading it every chance I get! Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful country with me.
