As we draw closer to July, a time when our country will officially implement the East Africa Community Customs Union, the concerned organizations like Rwanda Revenue Authority have started sensitization campaigns to prepare Rwandans for this outstanding development.

For sure, this development has been a long awaited dream. Considering that the advantages out weigh disadvantages a lot will sprout from this venture and as such, Rwandans should welcome this opportunity with open arms.

A time has come when all citizens in the partner states will think beyond ethnic and national identities towards a much bigger citizenship leading to a smooth globalization.

Elimination of tariffs and calculation of duties or even taxes at the point of first entry into the community is set to reduce prices of operation by far in fact, this economic integration will not only promote unity but it is a strategic way of accelerating development in all member states.

Free movement of goods, capital, labour, services, enterprises and general fiscal policy harmonization will also improve the quality of life since access to a variety of resources will be availed with a common market.

Integration is not a new phenomenon; it is a platform for growth as it strengthens trade links and relationships of partner nations. The initiative has worked for many developed nations and certainly will benefit East African countries too.

Rwandans should therefore brace themselves for this great move and think of how to maximize this opportunity rather than limit expectations in a conservative way.
