GATSIBO — An official of the European Union(EU) in Rwanda has said that funds earmarked to fight Gender Based Violence (GBV), HIV/AIDS and promote family planning in Gatsibo District were put to good use.

Mugeni Kayitenkore, officer in charge of Economics and Governance in the (EU) said this on Wednesday after inspecting various projects funded by the EU, including schools and individual beneficiaries.

The projects are funded under the Communities Allied Against Violence and Aids programme.

"I am impressed after hearing from the beneficiaries and reaching out to the field. The money was allocated for the intended purpose, it reached the vulnerable groups who were the intended beneficiaries,” she remarked, adding that the funds have made a great impact among the beneficiaries.

She appreciated the way residents have come together to help each other through a resolving fund where individuals get loans to set up small income generating projects.  

The project operates within its sites in Nyagihanga, Muhura, Kiziguro and Murambi sectors.

Venasia Chandali, 50, says she acquired capital from their resolving fund which she used to set up tomatoes and avocado groceries business.

The project is jointly funded by the EU which contributes 85 percent while some 15 percent is provided by CARE International. It is implemented by CARE International, Fact Rwanda and Rwanda Women’s Network.
