BUGESERA—Three senior-3 students at Nyamata secondary school were this Sunday arrested by Nyamata police for reportedly locking up a member of staff.

Students Kagabo, Fayda and Muzigula on Saturday after midnight allegedly put a padlock on the office door of teacher Augustin Gisagara while he was asleep, then proceeded to hit and broke the glasses of the room he was residing in.

School headmaster Anastas Nzaramba confirmed the arrests. "They are remanded at police,” he said. "I have talked to the district police commander and they tell me the students would not be released unless their parents turned up.”

An eye witness speaking on the condition of anonymity said a "serious scuffle” ensued between students and police as angry students hauling insults to police tried to resist the arres. Police had to call in reinforcements to overcome the students.

The same source said two of the students other than Kagabo were arrested for "insulting police.”

Nzaramba, or Mzee as he is fondly called by students,” said the trio when released would only be allowed to take national exams as day scholars.

He said Kagabo was notorious for petty crimes in school including stealing electric tubes.
