EASTERN PROVINCE

BUGESERA—A young girl has been arrested in Nyamata for allegedly aborting a four and half-month pregnancy, a relative to the girl has said.

The relative said Betty Uwitonze,18, was arrested on October 14 after aborting a pregnancy she had allegedly conceived with her former boss, a man known as Rugena in Kacyiru, Kigali City..

Uwitonze, an orphan also working as a house maid, was allegedly impregnated by her boss and then urged by him to "save him the embarrassment” of a child and get an abortion. Rugena is married with children.

He reportedly asked the girl to relocate to her family and secured medicine that the girl swallowed at different intervals until the foetus was out.

Police said the duo were yet to be produced for prosecution. Abortion, illegal in Rwanda, carries a sentence between five and ten years imprisonment with no provision for fine.
