Senate elections: Final results expected not later than September 24

The final results of the September 16-17 senatorial elections are expected to be released no later than September 24, according to the National Electoral Commission (NEC).

This comes after the electoral commission announced provisional results for 12 senators elected by electoral colleges from Rwanda’s four provinces and the City of Kigali on Monday and two others elected to represent public and private universities and higher learning institutions, on Tuesday, September 17.

Provisional results indicated that Laetitia Nyinawamwiza led the voting in Northern Province with 246 votes (73.00%), followed by Laetitia Rugira with 211 votes (62.61%). In Southern Province, Adrie Umuhire received the most votes, securing 300 (70.42%), followed by Pelagie Uwera with 268 votes (62.91%), and Sosthène Cyitatire with 263 votes (61.74%).

In Eastern Province, John Bonds Bideri led with 317 votes (80.46%), followed by Alvera Mukabaramba with 301 votes (76.40%), and Fulgence Nsengiyumva with 270 votes (68.53%). Western Province saw nine candidates compete, with Marie Rose Mureshyankwano leading with 286 votes (74.67%), followed by Emmanuel Havugimana with 266 votes (69.45%) and Cyprien Niyomugabo with 260 votes (67.88%).

In the City of Kigali, Esperance Nyirasafari, the previous Senate Vice President, was re-elected with 55.26% of the votes.

The elections, which saw a voter turnout of 97.02%, were conducted for 12 senators who were elected from a total of 32 candidates.

For university representatives, Telesphore Ngarambe was elected to represent public universities and higher learning institutions, while Penine Uwimbabazi will represent private universities. Ngarambe secured 808 votes (54.89%), while Uwimbabazi garnered 674 votes (97.68%).

The elections saw a voter turnout of 84.42% in public universities and 77.08% in private universities.
