Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Olivier Nduhungirehe has lauded the elevation of Rwanda-China relations to a "comprehensive strategic partnership," emphasising the benefits and future opportunities this upgrade presents.

This "milestone" was achieved during the recently concluded Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), where the countries committed to deepening cooperation across multiple sectors.
Speaking at a reception marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of People&039;s Republic of China hosted by the Chinese embassy in Kigali on Thursday, September 12, Nduhungirehe emphasized the importance of the enhanced partnership, which builds on a relationship that has existed since 1971.

"This marks a new chapter in our relationship, where we deepen cooperation for the benefit of both nations,” he said during the event hosted by Chinese Ambassador Wang Xuekun in Kigali.
The foreign minister highlighted China's significant role in Rwanda’s socio-economic development, citing investments exceeding $1.2 billion in key sectors such as infrastructure, health, energy, and education.
These contributions have played a vital part in Rwanda's economic growth.
"China’s support in areas like construction and manufacturing has played an important part in Rwanda’s economic development. We value China as a reliable and consistent partner,” Nduhungirehe said.
He reiterated that Rwanda endorsed China’s global initiatives, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative.
Nduhungirehe commended China for its leadership and commitment to these initiatives and reiterated Rwanda’s resolve to contribute to addressing shared global challenges.
"Rwanda continues to back the one-China policy, while China has stood with us in safeguarding national unity and fighting genocide denial. This partnership is built on mutual respect and shared values,” Nduhungirehe said.

China’s Ambassador to Rwanda, Wang Xuekun, echoed these sentiments, noting that 2024 is a "big year” for China-Rwanda relations.
"President Paul Kagame attended the 2024 Beijing Summit of FOCAC, and together with President Xi Jinping, they elevated our bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, marking an important milestone,” said Wang.
The diplomat emphasized that both countries regard each other as "long-term, trustworthy and reliable good friends and partners.”
Wang highlighted the economic collaboration between the two nations, noting that bilateral trade reached $550 million in 2023, with China’s imports from Rwanda increasing by 86 per cent.
He also referenced key agreements signed this year, including the import of Rwandan honey to China, as evidence of deepening economic ties.
The Chinese envoy underscored the shared political principles of both countries, emphasising mutual respect and support.
In a joint statement following the meeting of Presidents Kagame and Xi, Wang noted, "we reaffirmed our commitment to mutual support on issues of core interests, including Rwanda’s fight against the spread of genocide ideology and China’s reunification efforts,” he added.
Both leaders agreed to advance cooperation in areas such as agriculture, ICT, and education to foster long-term growth and mutual benefit.
