President Paul Kagame on September 13 tasked Joseph Nsengimana, the new Minister of Education, to advance the education system, noting that it is the foundation of the country’s development. This was during the new minister’s swearing-in ceremony at Village Urugwiro, following his appointment on September 11.

"Education is one of the primary things we prioritize in the development of our country, the people, and our collaboration with other countries. The educational outcomes are supportive,” the Head of State said.

He noted that an advanced education system prepares people who can address the many challenges the world is facing, and build on the knowledge they gained to develop themselves, among other things.

"Our education system has improved, but we have not yet reached the commendable level we desire due to many factors.”

Kagame said that the responsibilities are shared amongst the country’s leaders and should be fulfilled with a collaborative spirit to enhance Rwanda’s education which stands as a foundation of many things.

"We shall work together to fulfill these responsibilities that impact the youth, the young and the old, and the country&039;s development in general. It is not easy but it is doable. It has been done given where we have come from and where we are now.”

Nsengimana replaced Gaspard Twagirayezu, who was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Space Agency.

Until his appointment, Nsengimana was the director of the Mastercard Foundation’s Centre for Innovative Teaching and Learning based in Kigali.

Prior to joining the Mastercard Foundation, he worked with the US tech giant Intel Corporation.

His last role at Intel was Executive Director of Global Diversity and Inclusion Policy, Strategy and External Partnerships.

While at Intel, he crafted and led the implementation of the company’s Africa public policy and corporate affairs strategy. He also led the team responsible for government affairs, education, ICT and broadband policies in Sub-Saharan Africa.
