Campaign gospel well received
The Director General of Rwanda Diaspora Directorate, Robert Masozera, has said that since the launch of the One Dollar Campaign some time last month, so far about Rwf60m has been collected.
Masozera was speaking during the assessment meeting of the 15th commemoration events to mark the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The meeting was held yesterday at the headquarters of National Commission for the Fight Against the Genocide (CNLG) and presided over by the commission’s Executive Secretary, Jean de Dieu Mucyo.
The Campaign that is being championed by the Rwanda Diaspora Global Network (RDGN), aims at mobilizing funds from both within and outside the country to help provide accommodation to children orphaned by the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
"So far, the money collected is between Rwf50m and 60m, however, we are impressed by the way the message of One Dollar Campaign is spearing; the message has reached out to remote places that people are contributing willingly,” said Masozera.
He however pointed out that there is a lot of money that is still in pledges but he was quick to add that he has assurance all the pledges would be honoured.
Mucyo asked Masozera to present details of how the money collected is managed and in response, Masozera said that there are many signatories to the money and that there are several measures that have been put up to ensure that ‘not even a single coin is mismanaged or misused.’
The Secretary General RDGN, Dr. Ismael Buchanan said that the on behalf of the Diaspora, there has been much progress since the fundraising Campaign started.
The latest development comes merely days after Diaspora head Gustave Karara revealed that One Dollar Campaign is gaining momentum as more in the public, including commercial organizations.
The fundraising project was mooted during the Diaspora conference that was held in December last year and it aims at raising at least Rwf1.5bn for the period of 100 days symbolizing the time it took before the Genocide was stopped.
All these funds will be used in constructing accommodation facilities for the orphans, especially those in schools who fail to get where to go when schools close during holidays.
