MUSANZE —  A police constable attached to Muhoza Police Station on Thursday shot and killed an inmate who was attempting to escape from custody.

Wellas Nsabimana, 37, was shot and seriously injured, while trying to escape along with three other inmates. He was rushed to Ruhengeri Hospital where he died shortly after arrival.

Sources say police was prompted to shoot at Nsabimana, because he had refused to stop even after gun shots had been fired in the air.

The former agricultural officer at Kimonyi Sector had been arrested and was being held at Muhoza over corruption related charges.

The late Nsabimana  was arrested after reportedly soliciting money from residents before he could release funds for poverty eradication programmes under the  Ubudehe program.
The Police Spokesperson Supt. John Uwamungu confirmed the shooting incident yesterday, saying the deceased had hatched a plan along with the other three inmates to escape.

"Police shot in the air twice but he (deceased) continued to run and he was consequently shot in the back,” he said.

After the shooting incidence Supt.Uwamugu, said that  the police constable was immediately arrested. He is said to have made a statement which led to the launching of investigations into the shooting incidence.

Police identified the other inmates who were involved in the botched up escape as Innocent Nsengiyunva and Jean Bosco Semuhigirwa. They were later re-arrested.
