Rwandan golfer Celestine Nsanzuwera’s dream is to be a golf idol that new talents of making it in the game would look up to. He is gradually carving a niche for himself as one of the best young golfers in the East African region.
At just 23, Nsanzuwera has participated in a host of international tournaments alongside his brother Aloys Nsabimana. And they are already making a name for themselves with a number of fortunes already under their belt.
The most recent was the 2024 Uganda Golf Open where Nsanzuwera overcame stiff competition from more than 150 golfers to finish 2nd in the International event. For his prize, he took home a cash prize in excess of 21,000,000 Ugandan Shillings which is equivalent to $5,600, on top of a trophy.
Times Sport caught up with the Rwandan golf ace as he took us through his golf journey.
Tell us about yourself
I am Celestine Nsanzuwera, I am a senior high school graduate. I am a professional golf player at the Kigali Golf Resort and Villas. I was born in a family of six. I have three brothers and two sisters.
How did you actually find yourself into golf in the first place?
Actually my house is very close to the Golf Park. When we were young, my brother and I would go there to pick golf balls and gradually we developed interest in the sport as we grew up. I officially joined the Golf club in 2012, I was selected into the national team in 2016 and it was not until 2022 when I turned professional.
How was the 2024 Uganda Open?
The tournament was tough throughout. It was challenging too but I managed to keep my pace.
How does it feel winning the best professional golfer award at Uganda Open?
I’m so excited for my place because the tournament was tough and so many good players participated. I’m so happy I showed my pedigree
Next on your calendar is Ivorian Open and Kenya Open. What are your expectations?
I am looking forward to making the cut and come out on top in the both tournaments. I’m going to take a lot of time to prepare so that I hope to achieve something special.
Who are your role models in Golf?
I have many but my favorites are Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth.
There is a notion that golf is for the rich. Do you agree?
No, Golf is not for the rich. it’s purely based on talent and skills. Any one, regardless of their social class, can play it.
What would you tell young players aspiring to pursue a golf career?
They have to be disciplined and work hard.
What are your aspirations as a golfer?
I want to be the first Rwandan golfer to play in the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) tournament. I also want to win more tournaments both in Africa and overseas.
