Rwandan cyclist Moise Mugisha’s put himself in pole position to win the 2022 Tour du Cameroun which concludes on Sunday, June 12, after riding into the Yellow Jersey on Saturday. 

Mugisha has been playing his cards well during the race campaign despite not winning a single stage. 

The ProTouch rider, who is representing the national team in Cameroon, has instead been keeping track of the yellow jersey stage after stage until he took it over after coming fourth during Saturday’s stage after clocking 2 hours 48 minutes and 4 seconds, just three seconds adrift of stage winner Taillandier Axel of Team France Defence.

Stage 7 of the race saw riders race from Boumnyebel  to the finishing line in Mbalmayo, covering a distance of 112.6 km. 

Prior to the final stage, Mugisha sits top of the general classification after covering a total of 914.8 km in the past seven stages in 22hours 53 minutes and 49 seconds. 

The 25-year-old is now 32 seconds ahead of first runner-up Yordan Andreev of Martigues and 33 seconds ahead of Cameroon’s Tella Artuce Jodele with just one stage to go on Sunday.

Should he win the race on Sunday, Cameroon would be one of Mugisha’s luckiest countries he has ever competed in in his cycling career, having won the Grand Prix Chantal Biya held in the same country back in December 2020.
