The day before, the Alumni of Genocide Survivors’ Students Association (GAERG) held the annual memorial event for families that were completely wiped out during the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi, with the theme "Ntukazime nararokotse” (Never be forgotten when I survived).
Earlier in the week, Prime Minister Edward Ngirente officially launched the inaugural Generation Connect Global Youth Summit, which brought together over 500 youth from 115 countries, on June 2.
On the same day, as part of the celebrations for the 70th year of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession, beacons were lit in the capital city of Rwanda, Kigali, at Imbuga City Walk.
The beacons were lit at 9.15p.m local time of each capital city across the UK and the Commonwealth, as a unique tribute to The Queen that night on her platinum jubilee celebration.
On May 31, a plane carrying 132 refugees and asylum seekers evacuated from Libya landed at the Kigali International Airport.
It was the ninth group to arrive in the country, and was made up of 74 Eritreans, 5 Ethiopians, 4 Somalis, 4 South Sudanese and 45 Sudanese.
Last week also saw two bilateral agreements, involving an extradition treaty and an agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, signed between Rwanda and Mozambique on Friday, June 3.
The agreements cover all types of crimes, including those related to Genocide, yet the two parties agreed to also explore new areas of cooperation.
