Local football governing body, Ferwafa want the scheduled friendly match between Rwanda and Malawi to be played on the weekend of May 28-30 in Lilongwe.
Initially, Malawi Football Association had invited Rwanda for fully paid for international friendly match to be played in Lilongwe on the weekend of May 23-24 but their Rwandan counterparts replied proposing a change in date.
Ferwafa boss, Brig. Gen. Jean Bosco Kazura told Times Sport yesterday that they have requested the Malawi FA to be flexible enough and allow the match to be on the weekend of May 28-30.
"Our plan is to fly direct from Malawi after the friendly match to Lusaka (Zambia) for the World Cup qualifier without returning.
"Playing between those dates (May 28-30) would be easier for us to cut on the expenses of traveling and them returning from Malawi and again fly to Zambia in the same week,” Kazura said.
However, Ferwafa are still waiting for a confirmation from their Malawi counterparts on whether they would allow changing the dates.
According to Kazura, the friendly match is aimed at sharpening the Amavubi Stars ahead of the World/Africa Cup qualifier against Zambia on June 6 and Egypt in July 1.
The match will help create consistent team cohesion for Branko Tucak’s team.
Playing against Malawi will provide Amavubi with more or less the same kind of football as rivals Zambia.
Rwanda drew the first qualifier against Algeria 0-0 in Kigali while Zambia played out to a 1-all draw away to Egypt in Cairo. The draw left the group three wide open as all countries are tied on one point each.
The Amavubi Stars need to win the remaining matches to be granted qualification to both the 2010 World Cup finals and Africa Nations Cup finals in Angola or finish in the top three at worst to qualify for nations cup in Angola.
