Ten boxers have progressed to the next stage of the Universe Boxing Champion tournament on Sunday, September 8.
The monthly boxing competitions are hosted at and by Kigali Universe in collaboration with Sports Genix International (SGI). The tournament, which features men and women’s categories, serves as a qualifier to identify the top fighters who will represent Rwanda in international boxing competitions later this year.
Exceptional performances in this phase have set the stage for the final selection of Rwanda's national representatives.
The June fights saw 20 athletes go through to the next round, narrowing the field in anticipation of the final selection phase.
Key highlights from the just-closed weekend ring bouts include Olivier Kamali’s defeat to Jean Paul Iyanone and Aime's Iranezeza victory over Valentin Ntabanganyimana in a closely contested 20-minute fight.
In the 57kg category, Iguru Rubamba was declared the winner after the referee halted the match due to an injury sustained by Valens Niyomurinzi.
In the 67kg Welterweight division, Hassani Murenzi secured a knockout (K.O.) victory against Ahmed Ngabo. On the women’s side, Angel Nsengiyumva triumphed over Sandrine Uwase.
Other notable boxers who qualified for the next round include Isaac Niyonagize, David Nsabimana, Pacifique Niyonzima, Patrick Ndayishimiye, and Vincent Nsengiyumva.
Upcoming matches, complemented, are scheduled between October and December, after which the champions will be declared.
