Giants of Africa, in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and Rwanda Basketball Federation (FERWABA), proudly unveiled a new basketball court in Rubavu town on Monday, September 9.
The new basketball facility was constructed as part of Giants of Africa’s initiative to support and develop local basketball talent in the North-Western town, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to constructing 100 courts across Africa.
The new facility becomes the seventh basketball court launched by Giants of Africa in Rwanda.

Rubavu has established itself as a home of talents in various sports. But basketball lovers have been struggling to turn their career dream into reality due to lack of improved infrastructure.
Basketball hopeful Jucilene Uwimana said that it was a big challenge for her and fellow female basketball enthusiasts to get time to train at the very few facilities in the area. And, with the new basketball court, she believes that practice sessions will become more accessible and inclusive for all players, especially young women who previously had limited opportunities to play.
"Rubavu has undoubtedly been lacking a nice basketball court. We are going to do more practices than before. Thanks to all who have contributed to this milestone achievement,” said the 17-year-old, who dreams of playing for Rwanda and in the WNBA.
FERWABA recognised the court unveiling as not only a physical facility but as "a symbol of unity and teamwork.”
"This facility is a place of friendship, thanks to Masai [Ujiri] who continues to inspire youth in Africa,” said FERWABA president Désiré Mugwiza.
Representing Giants of Africa at the court unveiling was Sarah Chan, Toronto Raptors Manager of Africa Scouting, emphasised the positive impact the new court will have on the local community, particularly on youth interested in pursuing sports.
She highlighted the court as a platform for young athletes to develop their skills, confidence, resilience, and teamwork.
"This basketball court offers an opportunity for youth to reach their full potential. Kids will benefit from increasing their sports skills but also confidence, resilience, and teamwork," she noted.
The Ministry of Sports also commended the initiative, recognising the importance of providing adequate infrastructure to nurture talent for international competition.
Rwego Ngarambe, the Ministry Director of Sports Development, encouraged youth in Rubavu to pursue their dreams on the court, citing the town’s rich history of producing talented coaches and players.
"Rubavu is a home of talents, and this is how things will continue,” he said. "Coaches and best players come from here. Let this court be your platform for your dreams to come true as your elder athletes did many years back; the sky is the limit."
