As the new school year commences this week, it is imperative that parents play an active role in their children's education. Beyond ensuring regular attendance, parents should engage in frequent communication with teachers, monitor their children's progress, and provide a supportive home environment that is conducive to learning.

In addition to parental involvement, community support is essential for the success of our educational system. One such initiative that deserves our collective attention is the Dusangire Lunch school feeding programme. By contributing towards this programme, we can help ensure that every child has access to a nutritious meal, which is crucial for their academic performance and overall well-being.

Not much is being asked of us, as the government has done the heavy lifting on this one where the meal is subsidized by 90 per cent, meaning that for every child, a paltry Rwf3,000 is needed to feed them for an entire year.

However, while we call for community support to ensure children, especially those from vulnerable families can get a meal, parents must not abdicate their role in this endeavor. Those that can must make their contribution well in time to allow schools to plan effectively.

While the excitement of the new school year is palpable, it is important to remain vigilant about public health concerns. The ongoing threat of the MPox virus necessitates adherence to preventive measures, particularly during mass gatherings such as school events.

By practicing good hygiene, maintaining social distancing, and seeking medical attention when necessary, we can help mitigate the spread of this infectious disease.

Let us embrace the new school year with enthusiasm and a renewed commitment to our children's education. By working together as parents, communities, and educators, we can create a nurturing and supportive environment that will foster the growth and development of our future generations.
