A controversial decision by the assistant referee denied Atraco the chance to extend their lead at the top of the league table to four points.

The champions were frustrated to a goalless draw by troubled Rayon yesterday at Amahoro stadium.

After a dull first half from both teams, the taxi-men side noticeably improved their game in the second half, creating a couple of clear scoring opportunities but could not find the back of the net.

An 80th minute tap-in from Peter Kagabo was ruled off side as Atraco forced the hosts into their own half with attacking football.

The draw leaves Atraco with 47 points, two ahead of second placed APR, who beat Kiyovu 3-1 earlier on Saturday at Nyamirambo stadium.

Rayon started the game with good intent and in the first minute Albert Ngabo and Jimmy Gatete forced Atraco goalie Jean Luc Ndayishimiye into a fabulous double save.

Theoneste Muhayimana was the next culprit for the Blues when he headed well wide off target from close range.

Johnson Bagoole and Michael Sebalinga had Atraco first efforts on goal but both shot wide. Atraco started poorly but kept on pushing their opponents into their own half as the game grew older with striker Peter Kagabo and Jean Lomami proving a constant threat for Rayon defenders.

Rayon’s game faded in the final minutes of the first half with midfielder Abdul Uwimana showing signs of fatigue and lack of fitness.

Sebalinga wasted a good opening from a free kick after Ngabo handed the ball on the edge of the penalty box.

Gatete, who had a good game alongside Muhayimana, headed wide from Honore Kabongo’s corner on the 51st minute.

On the hour mark, Lomami’s weak header fell straight into Lawrence Webo’s waiting hands.

Ugandan winger Joseph Kabagambe wasted the game two best chances with only Webo’s goal at his mercy.

The first one deflected teammate Lomami and out for a goal kick and blasted the second and probably the best of the two way over the bar from just the box much to the frustration of his coach Sam Timbe, who substituted him with Ismail Habumugisha soon after the second miss.

Substitute Yussuf Ndayishimiye, who came in for Uwimana wasted Rayon’s best change of the match after being played well through by the hardworking Gatete.

On Saturday, Jean Mugiraneza, Bokungu Ndjoli and Elias Uzamukunda scored in APR’s 3-1 win over Kiyovu. Former APR midfielder Yussuf Kayihura scored Kiyovu’s consolation.

Relegation bound La Jeunesse lost for the 12th time this season after going down 2-0 against Mukura. Daddy Birori netted a brace for the Huye outfit. 

Marines jumped from the relegation zone following a 2-0 win over Electrogaz in Gisenyi. Bosco Sekamondo and Issa Habimana scored for the home side while Police defeated Kibuye 2-1 at Kicukiro artificial turf.

Origene Munyampundu scored a brace for Police while Emmanuel Minani netted the consolation goal for Kibuye.

AS Kigali lost 1-2 to Amagaju at Ferwafa artificial turf with Mubarak Kamanzi and Crispin Ibyimana scoring for the visitors while Kipson Atuheire notched the consolation for Eric Nshimyimana’s team.
