Bugesera – September 6, 2024 – In a ceremony held today, 84 trainees completed the Itorero training programme at the Rwanda Institute for Conservation (RICA).

Presiding over the completion of the Itorero training at RICA, Dr Ndabameye Telesphore, Director General of Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Board, who represented the Minister of Agriculture, urged the Phase 4 of ‘Intagamburuzwa za RICA’ to use values cultivated during Itorero to guide their principles in life. "We expect a lot from you and consider you as our partners in the modernisation of agriculture, as you embark on your academic journey which will make you leaders in the agriculture sector,” he said.

Dr Ron Rosati, RICA’s Vice Chancellor, urged the trainees to connect the knowledge they gained to the institute’s mission of preparing future leaders and innovators in conservation agriculture. He emphasised the importance of embracing Ubutore, particularly the first principle: Intore ntiganya ishaka ibisubizo (Intore do not complain; they seek solutions).

"As future leaders in conservation agriculture, you are expected to become agents of change and transform the agricultural sector with sustainable solutions in conservation agriculture to solve food security challenges. I am confident that the spirit of Ubutore you have cultivated will guide you to success, both personally and professionally,” said Rosati.

Julienne Uwacu, the Director General of Itorero and Culture Promotion, also addressed the ‘Intagamburuzwa za RICA’. "Strive for excellence in all your endeavors. As ambassadors of the Itorero, you are expected to embody the principles and values learned throughout your academic training and professional endeavours,” stated Uwacu.

She urged ‘Intagamburuzwa za RICA’ to keep their eyes on Rwanda’s Vision 2050, where agriculture is expected to play a considerable role in addressing poverty and food security challenges.

The trainees (42 young women and 42 young men) are new students admitted to RICA for the academic year 2024-2025. Itorero programme is rooted in Rwanda’s cultural and historical context and instills a strong sense of patriotism, integrity, excellence, community engagement, and leadership among the citizens of Rwanda.
