Gatsibo— Students at Gabiro High School went on strike last Thursday, one day before final exams.
The strike, violent at times, broke out after school administration suspended some Senior-4 students who had been threatening to fight each other on the last day of school.
After the headmaster called upon local authorities to address the students, the ‘undisciplined’ students were taken into custody by police, sparking a retaliation from other students at the school who began throwing stones at the armed authorities.
Now two more students have been arrested, and others are cooperating with authorities against their own classmates in investigations.
The vice mayor for social affairs Ivette Dusange and the executive secretary of kabarore sector Joseph Munyabarage together with the police on Thursday evening addressed the students at the school.
The disciplinary master of Gabiro Zacharie Rusanganirwa said there were cases of stubborn students who had been suspended but kept coming back to the school.
The school, together with the local leaders at all levels at the district, has called a parents meeting to take place on October 28, 2007 to discuss and put up strong measures to curb indiscipline.
Currently the students who have finished their exams have been sent home and only the Senior-3 candidates have remained and are reading for their final exams.
