NPC sets date for Goalball tourney

The National Paralympic Committee (NPC) has confirmed that the second edition of the annual Goalball national championship will be held on May 16 and 17 at Amahoro stadium.

The National Paralympic Committee (NPC) has confirmed that the second edition of the annual Goalball national championship will be held on May 16 and 17 at Amahoro stadium.

Nine clubs are expected to participation in the two-day event. They include; Kigali Institute of Education (KIE), Masaka, National University of Rwanda (UNR), Huye Gatagara, Nyanza Gatagara, Nyarugenge Blind Sport Club, Groupe Scolaire Gahini, Association Centre Pour la Paix des Jeunes Non Voyants (ACPJNV) and Abadahigwa Blind Veterans Club.

The NPC Secretary General, Celestin Nzeyimana expects this year’s championship to be more competitive than last year’s.

"We expect his year’s tournament to be very competitive and exciting because the teams and coaches involved have been trained by an expert from the Netherlands,” Nzeyimana said.

Mike Russchen, the head coach of the Netherlands national Goalball team also a professor of people with visual disabilities, was in the country recently and held various seminars and training sessions for coaches, technical directors and players of all local Goalball clubs.

Groupe scolaire Gahini were the winners of last year’s inaugural tournament.
