Kayiranga handed coaching responsibility

Six-time league champions Rayon Sport have agreed to pay sacked coach Raoul Shungu for the six month remaining on his contract.

Rayon Secretary General Olivier Gakwaya confirmed to Times Sport yesterday that they will pay the Congolese-born coach whose two-year contract was due to end in December.

Shungu, who has been getting $3000 (about Frw1.6m) on monthly wages, will be paid a cut package of $1800 (about Frw10 millions) for the remaining six months.

"Shungu signed a two year contract with Rayon Sport in 2007 and after being sacked, he will be paid the remaining six months on his contract.

"He was the first person to be paid the salary for the month of April, so he has no complaints concerning non payment,” Gakwaya said.

End of the road for Shungu

Shungu’s efforts to be pardoned were fruitless despite the club officials, players and Shungu himself spending the entire yesterday morning locked in an emergence.

Rayon had been discontented with Shungu for sometime and on Thursday, they decided to end their relationship unceremoniously.

Less than two weeks since being issued with a last warning, Shungu was dismissed on disciplinary grounds. He is blamed for the loss of Frw15,000,000 on foreign players on outrageous monthly wage some of whom have since deserted the team.

The Blues also accused their coach of causing bad blood between the club and the football federation, Ferwafa.

Shungu is Rayon’s most successful coach having won them four league titles (1997, 1998, 2002 and 2004), one Cecafa Club championship (1998).

Kayiranga takes over

Gakwaya also confirmed that Jean Baptist Kayiranga, who has been Shungu’s assistant, will temporarily take charge of the team until end of the season.

Kayiranga was Shungu assistant even the first last time Rayon won the league in 2004 before he (Shungu) walked on the club for greener pasture in Seychelles.

"Players will be paid their salary for the month of April but their wish to have Shungu restored is out of question.

"The players should realize that they’re only answerable to the club not Shungu. They will play the Atraco game on Sunday with Kayiranga in charge,” Gakwaya said.
