NYAMASHEKE — The Cyangugu Catholic Diocese has donated 60 exotic goats to widows and orphans in Nyamasheke District.

Handing over the goats at Nyamasheke parish hall early this week, Archbishop Jacque Niyibizi said the donation was aimed at fighting poverty among the beneficiaries.

"We know that poverty is among the challenges facing widows and orphans in this district. So, as God’s servants from the Catholic Church we decided to donate these goats to you in order to improve your daily living conditions,” Niyibizi said, noting that the goats were more productive compared to the indigenous ones.

The prelate added that the diocese has also constructed 214 houses for orphans and widows in the area. He further added that the diocese had  plans to make similar donations to other widows and orphans in Rusizi District.

Anaclet Karangwa, an official from the district thanked the diocese for the donation, and called upon donors to extend similar offers to other vulnerable groups in the region.

Jane Mukarwego, a widow who was among the beneficiaries selected from across the district said, "I am happy on this day to have received such an offer from Cyangugu Catholic Diocese, this is really great to me and I am optimistic that this will improve my life economically.”
