The second and fifth infantry divisions of Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) met with the second infantry division of Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) to discuss ways to combat cross-border illegal activities and developed strategies to address the challenges facing border communities, the RDF said on Saturday, August 31.
The meeting, held in Mbarara District of Uganda, was aimed at strengthening cross-border cooperation and curbing cross-border crimes between Rwanda and Uganda, the statement said.

The RDF delegation was led by Army Chief of Staff Maj Gen Vincent Nyakarundi, who was welcomed by UPDF Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security Maj Gen James Birungi.
UPDF Land Forces Commander, Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, who was the Chief Guest, commended the efforts of both countries to maintain security along their shared borders, according to the statement.

Muhanga observed that various meetings were scheduled between the military chiefs of the two forces to strengthen the existing historical relationship between the two countries and enhance security.
"Under the guidance and commitment of the two Heads of State, H.E. Paul Kagame and H.E. Yoweri Museveni, we conducted various meetings to address security challenges, particularly along the border,” Muhanga said.
"Undoubtedly, this initiative will foster harmony between the nations and ensure social transformation and prosperity,” he added.
RDF Chief of Defence Staff Gen Mubarakh Muganga met with his UPDF counterpart Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba on August 12, during the latter’s visit to Rwanda. The two military chiefs discussed bilateral ties between the two defence forces.

Nyakarundi, who spoke on behalf of Gen Muganga, extended his gratitude for the UPDF’s efforts in tackling illegal cross-border activities, according to the statement.
Nyakarundi also pledged that the RDF would always coordinate with UPDF to deter cross-border crimes and violent extremism in the region.
The previous meeting between the two sides was held in May in Nyagatare District, Eastern Province of Rwanda.
