For some people, setting goals at work is not a priority. However, from a career perspective, it is important to understand what you want to achieve and how to achieve it.

Francis Mwangi, a lecturer at Mount Kenya University says milestones simply mean progressing toward your goals. When this is familiar, he says it’s easier to set goals and achieve them without difficulties.

Steps to achieving this

Mwangi believes that getting to understand where you start from and where you are heading is very crucial. Besides, he says one has to prioritise them as well as stay committed to making any progress whatsoever.

"Understanding what you really want to achieve is important, this could range from achieving financial, and professional to social milestones. The most important thing here is getting committed to all of them,” he says.

Besides, he says that when one isn’t sure of how and when they are going to achieve their milestones, there is a need to seek professional help so that they don’t make mistakes as far as achieving their goals is concerned.

Mathias Nkeeto, an educator says once one knows where they stand, and where they want to be, it’s quite easier to achieve their milestones.

In addition to this, Nkeeto says coming up with a specific time you need to accomplish every milestone is essential.

"Coming up with the time you want to achieve goal milestones is important, but this has to be something you can achieve anyway, he says.

Besides, it’s also advised that setting a new milestone only after achieving the last one is beneficial.

It’s also advised that when one sets a milestone, it’s vital to write it down. Studies show that not only does doing so help one further define the milestone, it also makes one more likely to achieve it.

Research also shows writing down goals makes you 42 per cent more likely to reach them.

Aside from this, one shouldn’t push too much, it is ideal to learn from mistakes made along the way so that it can help you excel in future.

There is also no need for one to leave or forget other milestones down the road because you failed to meet one, however, taking time to work on them is crucial.

Moving forward, it is also advised for one to learn how to achieve small milestones and that doing this; helps you learn and get motivated on how best you can improve depending on what normally drags you behind.

Mwangi notes that depending on what you have set to achieve, there is also a need to always flashback and find out some obstacles that were there before you reach where you are at the moment.
