Expansion works at the Gahanga International Cricket stadium are ongoing with the facility undergoing a major upgrade as Rwanda’s lone international cricket stadium.

An additional pitch is being constructed at the facility and the contractor is working round the clock to get the pitch ready to ensure there is enough Cricket space for delegates coming for the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting slated from June 20-26.

"The construction works are being carried out day and night as we look forward to hosting so many delegates expected to attend the CHOGM at this facility. We hope they will be able to access the pitch during their stay,” Emmanuel Byiringiro, the General Manager of Rwanda Cricket Association said.

"The new pitch is being constructed to meet international standards required for any cricket ground. All these infrastructures are part of our plan to turn this country into a cricket hub in the region,” he added.

The whole expansion phase will cost Rwf 500 million and according to Byiringiro, part of the financing for the project has been provided by the Ministry of Sports in addition to the turf and floodlight that will be used at the new pitch.

The expansion activities on the new pitch are set to be complete by September. 

The construction works on Gahanga International Cricket Stadium, the first of its kind in the region, started in April 2015 after the Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation received a lease certificate for a 4.5-hectare plot in Gahanga sector, Kicukiro district.
