Kiyovu's chances of lifting their first league title after 29 years were dealt a huge blow after slipping up in the Rwanda premier league title race following a 1-1 draw against Étoile de l’est on Monday at Kigali stadium.

Peter Agblevor scored the opening goal for Étoile after 35 minutes before Emmanuel Okwi's strike cancelled out the visitors' lead to draw level with five minutes to full time.

The Uganda Cranes skipper's goal was, however, not enough for Kiyovu to take home all three points.

The draw keeps the Green Baggies second on the league table with 61 points, two points behind table leaders APR who beat Gorilla 2-1 through goals from Fitina Ombolenga and Yves Mugunga.

Mugunga's winner came seven minutes to full time after striker Camara Mohamed's goal gave Gorilla an equalizer that canceled APR's lead.

Meanwhile, Gicumbi became the first team to be relegated to the second division after losing to Mukura 0-1 in Huye.

The Southern Province-based club's victory kept them in hunt for the top four finish although they now sit fifth on the table with 44 points with two match days to go, just a point behind fourth-placed AS Kigali.

In other fixtures, Rayon Sports beat Musanze 3-1 while Police came from behind to beat relegation-threatened side Rutsiro 3-2 on Sunday as AS Kigali and Bugesera FC drew 0-0.

The league will return after the international break with Kiyovu traveling to Rusizi to face Espoir while APR will face AS Kigali.
