Technical skills, also known as hard skills, are normally qualities acquired by using and gaining expertise in performing physical or digital tasks.

These, are the abilities and knowledge needed to perform specific tasks, and most of the time are practical, and often relate to mechanical, information, or scientific tasks.

Some examples include knowledge of programming languages, design programs, mechanical equipment, or tools among others.

Mark Ndagijimana, a deputy teacher at GS Ruhango Catholique School in Ruhango District says in any working environment, those who show the ability to help the company achieve its goals, are the ones that are highly considered.

But this means one has to possess the right technical skills considered to get work done.

With the right technical skills, one can ensure to get hired easily or even promoted to another level.

Ndagijimana says that working or carrying out any task requires that one uses multiple skill sets, which still fall under technical skills.

Importance

According to studies, technical skills are important because nearly every job relies on different tools, programs, and processes.

For instance, it’s evident that if one has sought-after technical knowledge and skills common in their industry, they will be a more competitive candidate than others.

Also, it’s believed that in most cases, it’s essential for employees to have everything they need to carry out their roles successfully in any given organisation.

Equipped with the right skills, they can effortlessly work cross-functionally.

This means better-informed decisions and delivery of target objectives or goals. With everyone working on the same page, your business can accomplish its goals faster.

Jackline Iribagiza, a counsellor says technical training can make employers more confident and efficient.

She says that by providing training for the technical skills needed to perform their role, employees will know they are a valuable asset to the organisation they are working for.

Studies suggest a number of ways to improve on your technical skills as shown below;

· Enrolling in courses for different skills

Most technical skills can be learned through a dedicated training program or class. Depending on the type of skill, you may be able to learn that skill by taking one or more courses, either online or in person. There are free and paid classes available online.

·  Use a self-study training program

There’s a chance you may be able to acquire different skills through self-study programs. That could include "how-to” books, self-paced online lessons, or free training materials available from different sources.

·  Learn from a professional

You may be able to locate a professional who already possesses the technical skills you want. If so, that individual may be able to help teach you the skills you’re looking for, either for free or for compensation.

·  Learn on the job

Some employers may be able to provide on-the-job training. If you do not have certain technical skills an employer desires, make it known that you are eager to learn whatever skills are necessary to effectively perform the job.
