The skin is the body’s largest organ, for this reason, taking good care of it is important for more than just your appearance because it is essential to general health.
Dr Francoise Gahongayire, a dermatologist at King Faisal Hospital, says it is important to take care of the skin because skin conditions can appear anywhere on one’s body.
Taking care of the skin, she says, is something to start early, and also ensure to visit a dermatologist once in a while.
Dr Gahongayire says it’s important to keep in mind that taking good care of the skin goes beyond just appearance. Doing this on a daily basis is important as it helps the skin stay in good condition all the time.
"Throughout the day, one sheds skin cells, this is why it’s recommended that you keep your skin glowing and in good condition by simply taking care of it,” she says.
An effective routine can help prevent acne, treat wrinkles, and keep your skin looking its best.
Importance
Dr Francis Kazungu, a general practitioner, says just like facial care, skin care can as well be combined with facial care every morning and evening, as well as oral care and hair care routine, for better health.
Doing all of these things may help motivate you to eat better and exercise as well. It all adds up to a happier, healthier you.
"Having a daily skincare routine helps you to look your best, which is one way of living a life without stress or depression. This also helps when it comes to preventing some conditions that come with poor hygiene,” he says.
For instance, he says doing things like wearing sunscreen, washing the face daily, and using a good moisturiser can prevent invasive treatments in the future.
In addition to this, Kazungu says once one gets older, they will still glow because of healthy choices on skincare.
Dr Gahongayire says that it’s also important to note that everyone’s skin is different, and most people might be required to do more to keep their skin looking healthy—that is why it’s recommended to look for a dermatologist for proper advice on how to go about taking care of the skin.
Health experts also affirm that when you take good care of your skin, it means that prevention of illnesses, as the skin is the primary barrier between the outside world and your vital organs.
Because of this, it helps block germs, illness, and other harmful elements from penetrating your body and doing damage.
Also, healthy skin is better able to defend one from elements that would make them sick.
