National rally champion Davite Giancarlo could not hide his frustration after reccing through the KCB Pearl of Africa Uganda route on Wednesday.

"I will try,” were his words after his reccing session. Like most of the other drivers, Giancarlo had his reservations for the route saying that the roads were very bad.

"The roads are very bad with so many potholes. It’s going to be tough and crazy out here,” he told Times Sport.

Giancarlo’s findings will do little to aid his goal of trying to finish the three-day grueling event which sets off this afternoon with a Super Special Stage at Jomayi Kawuku Estate, Entebbe road.

Despite competing in the first two rounds (Kobil rally of Tanzania and KCB Safari rally) of the FIA Africa Rally Championship (ARC), the Italian-born rally ace is yet to notch a point after crashing out in both rounds.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s Jamie Whyte has tipped Uganda’s speedster Emma Katto to win the race. Whyte, last year’s winner, believes the Ugandan’s inside knowledge gives him a significant edge.

"Katto knows the home terrain better just as we fancy our chances at home,” he was quoted in Uganda’s Daily Monitor.

Thirty-three drivers are taking part in the 793.38km event. There are 21 competitive sections (CS) spread over 302.01km.

Mwere-Mityana is the longest CS with a total distance of 24.92km while Mityana Administration-Naama is the shortest CS with 8.19km.

On top of being the third leg of the ARC, the rally also counts as the second tier on the inaugural KCB East African Rally Challenge.

Whyte leads the ARC chats with 20 points. Katto is in second with 12 points while Zambia’s Muna Singh is third on eight points. Rwanda’s Olivier Costa and Don Smith are tied in fourth place with seven points.
