President Paul Kagame chaired the first meeting of the Cabinet on Friday, August 23, following the swearing-in ceremony that marked the beginning of a new five-year term earlier this week.

The new Cabinet, which was sworn in on August 19, consists of 21 Ministers and nine Ministers of State appointed on August 16.

Most of the Cabinet members who were in the previous government were reappointed, along with Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente.
New faces in the government include Prudence Sebahizi, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Richard Nyirishema, the Minister of Sports, and Christine Nkulikiyinka, the Minister of Public Service and Labour.

The Cabinet implements national policy. According to the Constitution, the Cabinet is accountable to the President and the Parliament.
Under the responsibilities of the cabinet, the Prime Minister leads the functioning of the government per the main guidelines given by the President and ensures the implementation of laws.
The Prime Minister also formulates government programmes in consultation with Cabinet members and presents them to Parliament within 30 days of taking office.
Among the many programmes expected is the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2) which will guide the country’s development path over the next five years.
