The new national football team coach, Carlos Alos Ferrer, has resigned barely days after signing a one-year deal according to a source in the Rwanda football federation, (Ferwafa).
The Spaniard was unveiled on Tuesday by Ferwafa Secretary General Henry Muhire after beating off competition from a shortlist that had experienced coaches like French nationals Alain Giresse and Sébastien Bernard Migné and Egyptian Hossam Mohamed El Badry.
The finalist candidates also comprised former Amavubi coach, Stephen Constantine, who guided Rwanda to its record highest position (64th) in FIFA rankings.
Amavubi have not performed well in the last few years, something that saw the football body decline to renew former coach Vincent Mashami’s contract.
There was debate in some football circles after Carols Ferrer was named Amavubi coach as to whether Ferwafa and the Ministry of Sports made the right decision in appointing him considering the wealth of experience the other candidates have.
Weekend Sport could not get a comment from the top leadership of Ferwafa by press time because the head of the football body, Olivier Nizeyimana, Vice president, Marcel Habyarimana, and Secretary General Henry Muhire are currently in Doha, Qatar, for a FIFA congress.
Happy April Fools’ day!
