Hosts Rwanda booked their ticket to the semifinals of the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup pre-qualifiers after handing giants Argentina a 58-38 humbling defeat, on Wednesday night.

President Paul Kagame and First Lady Jeannette attended the match which attracted massive crowds at the BK Arena.

Former Washington State University star Bella Murekatete recorded her second straight double-double in the ongoing qualifying tournament, this time scoring 18 points and 18 rebounds who powered Cheikh Sarr’s side past one of the bookies’ favorites Argentina and claim the top spot in Group D with one more game to play.

Destiny Philoxy won the hearts of Rwandan fans with her scoring prowess, finishing with 10 points and 8 assists while former WNBA forward Keisha Hampton added 15 points.

Florencia Changes was 3-for-3 from the three-point arc to lead Argentina’s scoring ladder with 9 points but her side couldn’t cope with the hosts who looked more aggressive on the court and ready to leave it all before their home supporters.

Rwanda will be back in action on Thursday, August 22, when they play their final Group D game against Great Britain.

Kigali is hosting both Group C and D World Cup pre-qualifiers. Group C comprises Hungary, Senegal, Brazil and the Philippines while Group D consists of Argentina, Lebanon, Great Britain and host nation Rwanda.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, with the winner of each group securing a place in the main qualifying tournament that will take place in March 2026.
