Kagame appoints six councillors for City of Kigali

Samuel Dusengiyumva, the current Mayor of City of Kigali, is among six councillors, who will be among 12 City of Kigali council members.

President Paul Kagame has appointed six councillors, who will be among 12 City of Kigali council members.

According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister on August 21, the appointees include Samuel Dusengiyumva, the current Mayor of City of Kigali, and Fulgence Dusabimana, the Vice Mayor in charge of Urbanization and Infrastructure, and Christian Mugenzi Kajeneri, who was serving as a member of the city council member.

There is Marie Grace Nishimwe, who is the Director General and Chief Registrar of Land Title at the National Land Authority, Flavia Gwiza, and Jack Ngarambe, the Director General of Urbanization, Housing, and Human Settlement at the Ministry of Infrastructure.

These six councillors appointed will be joined by another six who will be elected to complete the council. Each district will elect two representatives, with at least one being a woman.

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) postponed the elections for the elected councillors on August 16, and a new date has not yet been announced.

The current term for City of Kigali Councillors ends on August 31.

Recently, the NEC approved a list of 45 candidates to contest in the City of Kigali councillors and Executive Committee members elections.

There are 23 candidates from Gasabo District, nine from Kicukiro District, and 13 from Nyarugenge District.

The Electoral College, which is made up of sector council members from the districts, will elect the city council members.

After the election of council members, the next step will be electing the executive committee members.

The Electoral College for the City of Kigali Executive Committee comprises all city council members and council members from all sectors within the city.

According to the 2019 law governing the City of Kigali, members of the executive committee serve a five-year term.
