NORTHERN PROVINCE

The Regional Police Commander, Supt Rogers Rutikanga has cautioned local residents against drug abuse.

While destroying illegal drugs in Nyange Sector, earlier impounded from various sector units, the police chief said drugs contribute to the crime rate increase, especially domestic violence.

The drugs worth Rwf40 million included 5219 litres of local brew, commonly known as kanyanga, over 100 cartons of chief waragi and 238 kilograms of marijuana, impounded over the last three months.

Drug abuse is listed as the second most prevalent crime in the area, Rutikanga added.

The ceremony was witnessed by scores of residents some of whom confessed to have been addicted to drugs, but later abandoned the habit.

It has been reported that most of the drugs are sneaked into the country from neighbouring countries, namely the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda.
