MUHANGA — Police in Nyamabuye Sector, Muhanga District, have arrested three men in connection with drug trafficking.

The suspects, Abubakar Niyonzima, a taxi operatorfrom Gisenyi, Twagiramungu and Issa Hitimana, both residents of Nyamabuye, were arrested last week as they sorted out rolls of marijuana drugs in Hitimana’s sitting room. The drugs were trafficked in Gisenyi.

Police say the trio denied the charges.

"Police caught up with the suspects on April 20 in the evening after a tip off from responsible residents, but the trio has denied possession of 60,000 marijuana rolls,” Police said.

Niyonzima, who was hired to transport the drugs, has also denied prior knowledge of the illicit drugs.

Police sources however, said the suspects will be produced in court to answer charges of drug trafficking.

According to police, drug abuse is on the increase in the area, with most drugs being sneaked into the district from neighbouring countries.
