Muhazi United held Musanze FC to a 1-1 draw on Sunday, August 18 in the Primus National League.
The closely contested match took place at Ngoma Stadium.
It was Muhazi that scored first, breaking the deadlock in the 15th minute, thanks to Yvan Dikoume's header off a well-executed corner kick.
Musanze FC responded, controlling possession and moving the ball forward in search of an equaliser.
Their persistence paid off in the 44th minute when a powerful strike by Sulei Muhammad was parried away by Muhazi's goalkeeper, before Inemest Sunday Anang pounced on the rebound to slot home the equalizer.
The second half saw both teams adopt different approaches, with Muhazi United dominating possession while Musanze relied on quick counterattacks.
The game remained balanced, with chances for both sides. Muhazi United's captain, Joseph Sackey, came close in the 59th minute with a powerful header from a cross, but Musanze's goalkeeper made a good save to keep the score level.
One of the best chances of the second half came in the 75th minute when Muhazi's forward Samson Babua received a through ball and found himself in a one-on-one situation with Musanze's goalkeeper. His shot narrowly missed the target, keeping the score 1-1.
After the game, Muhazi's head coach Emmanuel Ruremesha commended Musanze, saying they are a strong team which finished third last season for a reason.
"We started well but lost momentum. It was a tough match, but I am proud of my players. We will focus on improving," he noted.
Musanze's head coach Sosthene Habimana acknowledged Muhazi United’s quality as he pointed out areas for improvement within his own squad.
"We played well in the midfield, but our finishing let us down. We need to be more clinical if we want to win future games," he said.
Both teams will return to action on August 25 and 26, with Muhazi United hosting Gorilla FC and Musanze visiting AS Kigali.
