Glow up tips to help you crush your interview
Wednesday, February 02, 2022

Knowing proper interview etiquette is essential for successful interviewing whether it’s online or in person. Your body language, how you dress and your communication skills will determine the outcome of the interview.

The Glow Up

This colloquial expression speaks to one’s confidence and aura being projected.  If you learn to glow up correctly it will serve you well in all areas of your life. To achieve the ultimate interview glow up you should:

Know your audience

Do your homework. Research the company and the interviewers if possible. Search for current news releases and any latest updates. This will help you get a better sense of the company so you can strategize better.

Remember, the more prepared you are, the more confident you become, hence the more you glow.

Prep with mock interviews

Anticipate the questions that you may be asked and practice, practice, practice. There are certain standard questions that you are guaranteed to get, such as - "Tell me about yourself” or "Why should we choose you?” Google is a great source for terrific interview brain teasers. You should also prepare questions specific to your industry and try to identify case scenarios.

Then, seek the help of a friend or a mirror and let the prep work begin!

Pack wisely In-Person Interviews

Albeit a handbag or a shoulder bag, what’s in your bag matters. You don’t want to be seen scuffling through your bag for a pen or a document in an interview. That may give off the impression that you’re disorganised and it will also rattle your nerves. So to avoid the bag drama, pack wisely. Have 3-5 copies of your resume printed and uncreased in an envelope or file jacket. A small note pad with 2 black ink pens and 1 blue ink pen to take notes if necessary. Take facial wipes in case you need to freshen up a bit. Be sure to also pack your COVID-19 essential products. So, choose a bag that’s big enough to fit everything comfortably.

Online Interviews

Whereas you don’t have to pack a bag for an online interview, you should organise your desk. Have a notepad and pen handy. Make sure your desk is free from clutter; this will help you to focus on the interview at hand and not be distracted.  Also, have a glass or bottle of room temperature water nearby to keep hydrated. This is important especially if the interview goes longer than expected.

Know what not to wear

Presentation is everything so your first impression should be your best impression. Therefore, what’s trending is not necessarily your best bet for an interview attire. Dress in professional business wear and avoid:

Uncomfortable shoes

Excessive flashy jewellery

Heavy cologne or perfume

Too much makeup

Ungroomed facial hair

Poor fitted wrinkled clothing

Your goal is to land the job so what you wear should be in tandem with your professional skills.

Get your mind right

Affirm yourself with positive thoughts. Remember, you were shortlisted for an interview, so they are interested. Approach the interview as a growth opportunity and know that your best is more than enough! The fact that you did the groundwork, prepped, packed and picked the right outfit should put you in the right frame of mind.

Be sure to get there early as well so you can relax and psyche yourself up. Mindset is everything, so get your mind right!

In conclusion, your glow up is dependent on your preparedness. So, the question is - Are you ready to glow up?
