The Touch: Cover me in wool

If there is one thing the Obamas have taught us to love in their new role so far is the demure that is in fashionable Tweed and wool coats. We love these coats because on top of being cool and attractive they protect us from Kigali’s unpredictable weather.

However when worn wrong it can leave one feeling no more than a matron. When worn right, one will look nothing short of fabulous. Long coats ensure that we stand out and stay warm in this sophisticated 60s fashion style.

These coats have been around for decades but this decade we find ourselves spoilt of choice, there is plaid, wool, tweed and trench coats all calling out to our love for gorgeous outlooks.

When choosing the right coat one should consider the function of that coat. If it’s just for the weather, then wool and plaid coats are normally well layered to keep you all warm.

But if you are buying one for everyday stepping out then you might just consider a thinner layer coat like a trench coat.

While buying coats you will realise that you might have to go a size higher in order to accommodate the shoulders and the outfit you are wearing the coat with. Always button up the coat before buying it.

You may think you will never wear it buttoned up but you just never know when bad weather will catch up with you.
Coats should not be worn with matching outfits.

For the most interesting looks instead, pair with jeans, a flirty skirt or a bright pair of tights. You can also brighten the look by wearing colourful scarves and sashes.

Play with other textures to complement your coat choices. With a tweed jacket, pair a silky top. With plaid pumps weal a glossy shinny round skirt.

Most of the coats this season are a bit expensive and hence one should opt for quality and colours that can go with almost your whole wardrobe.

If you can afford an expensive coat then opt to buy a second-hand one. In Nyabugogo market you will be surprised at the wide selection of great hand-me-down plaid coats that are still very wearable.
