Everyone wants to start a career that will not be an exhausting one or a stressful one, even for workplaces no one wants to work in an area that requires them to hold their breaths walking in or to work feeling like they are walking in hell.
"Transitions can be frightening, but they are also an opportunity for a happier future if you are currently working in an unhealthy work environment. If you get a job you love, your chances of being more productive and having rapid career growth are higher. You also deserve to spend your working hours doing something that is fulfilling. Quitting a toxic job ensures you prioritize your mental and physical health, which is more important than a regular paycheck,” states an article by Indeed about quitting toxic jobs.
Alice Umutoni who worked in a toxic workplace describes it as a roller-coaster of emotions.
"It can heavily impact your emotions, well-being and mental health, I once was working in a place where my boss was very toxic to me. I was his assistant secretary and I always felt like I was walking on eggshells while around him. Whenever he would enter in the office he would yell at me without reason and I was always forced to apologize for nothing. I was practically treated as a rug and it went on for one year, my mental health was worse at that time and I was afraid to quit because I thought I will not have any other job”.
She says that gathered the courage to quit when she couldn’t handle it and was starting to have sleepless nights because of it.
Ivan Muhumuza a communication manager in a shipping company says that a toxic workplace not only negatively impacts the employees but also the company’s image.
"Toxicity is not something that can be hidden, a company that has toxic leaders or employees also transmit it outside to their clients, a client can see those toxic manners and it can result in not coming back to get services from the company which brings a downfall to the company”.
Signs that it may be time to quit
"A toxic environment will drain your energy and passion, even if it is a job that you like a career that you have been dreaming about it can emotionally exhaust you, I have seen many people refusing to quit due to different reasons but it is not worth staying either because in the end it is you that you are destroying, you can find another job you will love doing and that will not make you feel like you do not belong there,” says Adia Umuhoza who works in a cleaning company.
