APR  3-0 Federal Defense (Ethiopia)

APR wasted no time in disposing off Ethiopia’s Federal Defence in their opening game at this year’s Men’s Africa Volleyball Club Championship being held in Cairo, Egypt.

The Rwandan side capitalized on the Ethiopians’ weak blocks to post a convincing 3-0 straight sets victory.

The national champions were drawn in Pool B along with defending champions Zamalek, (Egypt), Prisons Service (Nigeria), Federal Defense (Ethiopia) and VC Tonnere (RD Congo) and now after that convincing win on day one, there is a feeling that they (APR) have a realistic chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.

"Apart from Zamalek, the other sides are not any different from APR so if the team can stick to their game plan, they have a real good chance of making the quarter-finals,” the executive secretary of the local volleyball governing body (FRVB) Gertrude Kubwimana said.

The championship has attracted 18 clubs, seeded into four pools.

Pool A pits record champions Al Ahly with Liberte (South Africa), Olympic Chlef (Algeria) and FAP (Cameroon).

Pool C contains Ahly Tripoli (Libya), Inter Club (Congo), Force Terreste (RD Congo) and Port Douala (Cameroon) while Pool D pits GSU (Kenya), Sonel (Cameroon), Muzinga (Burundi) Ahly Beni Ghazi (Libya) and Mugher Cement (Ethiopia).

Last year, Zamalek lifted their third trophy in the championship after a thriller 3-1 final victory over Al Ahly. At the end of the championship, the winner qualifies for the lone slot at stake for this year’s World Club Championship in Serbia.
