RUSIZI— National University of Rwanda has launched a new branch to its countrywide education system in Kamembe sector.

Students from Nyamasheke, Karongi, Rubavu and Rusizi arrived over the past weekend on today finish their first full week on the new campus, where they are specialising in information communication technology (ICT).

Particular programmes include computer programming and engineering, with most classes being held in evening hours to accommodate working students.

Mayor of Rusizi Jean Pierre Turatsinze in welcoming the students said that the new university was conceived first after a 2005 visit by President Paul Kagame to Cyangugu, where students pleaded for more support from the government in education.

He also added that the university would improve working performance of residents and district employees in their various activities in the area since they will go for further studies at the new school.

Seventy students have already been registered at this university and each Rwandan student is to pay Frw300,000 a year. Students from neighbouring Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo will pay Frw500,000.

Other courses that are underway to be taught at the new university include law and management. Some staff from the NUR Butare campus have also shifted to Rusizi.
