The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) has decided to uphold the existing limit on the number of foreign players allowed on the clubs' starting lineups, despite calls to increase the quota.

The decision means that the cap will remain at six foreign players per team on the field, as opposed to expectations that the limit would be raised to eight for the upcoming season.

A meeting of FERWAFA's executive committee made the resolution on Wednesday, August 14, following a request from the Rwanda Premier League Board, which had asked for an increase in the number of foreign players.

"For the 2024/25 season, teams in the top division will be permitted to field no more than six foreign players per game,” said Alphonse Munyentwari, the president of FERWAFA.

The Rwandan league continues to attract talent from across Africa, particularly from football powerhouses such as Ghana and Nigeria.

During the current transfer window alone, several foreign players have joined Rwandan teams. For example, reigning champions APR FC signed Richard Lamptey and Dauda Yussif from Ghana, while Police FC and Mukura Victory Sports added Issah Yakubu and Abdul Jalilu, respectively, also from Ghana.
