Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of Antoine Ruvebana, the former permanent secretary of the then Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR) over alleged rape.
According to Thierry Murangira, the Spokesperson of RIB, Ruvebana was arrested on 11 December 2021 over different sexual offences that he committed in the past years.
Murangira didn’t offer more information about the case to protect the rights of the victims.
Ruvebana worked as the Permanent Secretary of MIDIMAR from 2012 to 2017, before the ministry was changed to Ministry of Emergence Management.
He is being held at Kicukiro RIB station as investigations continue, after which his file will be sent to prosecution for possible arraignment in court.
If convicted, sexual assault is punished by between 10 to 15 year imprisonment while attempt to rape is punished by between 5 and 7.5 year imprisonment.
