The national basketball team head coach, Cheikh Sarr has signed a two-year contract extension.
The Senegalese tactician has been at the helm of both the men's and women's national teams since April this year.
In September, he led the men's national team to the quarterfinals of the Afrobasket, a competition that attracted 16 African countries.
Among the responsibilities given to him in his new tenure in Rwanda, he will be preparing the men's national team for the upcoming FIBA World Cup 2023 qualifiers, which get underway in February next year.
"He will as well prepare the women's national team for the 2023 Women's Afrobasket," said Desire Mugwiza, the President of the Rwanda Basketball Federation (Ferwaba) in an exclusive interview with Times Sport.
Mugwiza appreciated the work Sarr has done so far to improve the national team, in addition building the capacity of local coaches.
"He has helped in building capacity. He has visited various places of the country, providing training to coaches, because he is a certified FIBA instructor," he said.
He added: "Based on what we have discussed, he wants to do something sustainable here in Rwanda."
"Having such a coach is a great opportunity, because we are going to have many coaches who are trained, and these will help to raise the children with good skills and knowledge about the game."
Sarr is an experienced tactician who has served as head coach of both the men and women’s basketball teams of Senegal.
During his tenure as head coach for Senegal women’s national team, he led them to the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in 2018.
As head coach for the men’s team, Sarr led them to the second round of the FIBA men’s basketball world cup in 2014.
